Creative sewing for parents

For parents and carers wishing to learn or develop sewing skills to use at home with the family.

Please enquire about our creche facilities for pre-school children aged 2-5 years. We are sorry but children under 2 years of age are not permitted to attend these sessions.

What you’ll learn

  • how to use a sewing machine
  • basic sewing skills including seams and hems
  • how to make simple items such as cushion covers and shopping bags and soft toys
  • some simple textile techniques such as patchwork and embroidery for items such as throws and quilts

How the course is taught

The course is tutor-led, with demonstrations, samples, and one-to-one support. 

You'll support and learn from each other through group discussions of work in progress and finished work.

What you'll need

You'll need:

  • a folder
  • A4 paper or notebook
  • pen, pencil, ruler and eraser
  • paper scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • tape measure
  • needles and pins

There's a £5 fee to cover materials used in the first few weeks of your course. 

After that, you need to provide your own fabric, threads and other relevant materials.

After the course

You will have increased confidence in your work and skills and will be able to help your children with craft and sewing projects.

You can enrol on other family learning courses or adult learning courses in sewing, garment making, or crafts at Southwark Adult Learning Service or other providers such as City Lit or Morley College.
