For learners with some experience of making garments from a commercial pattern – build your knowledge and experience and get creative with your design ideas!

What you’ll learn

  • how to resize a pattern to fit your body shape and size
  • how to make basic alterations to the silhouette of a garment (for example, adjust the length or bust line)
  • how to adapt a pattern for a different style or fit
  • the significance of using the grain of the fabric (for example, cutting on the bias to achieve a stretch)

How the course is taught

The course is tutor-led, with demonstrations, samples, and one-to-one support. 

You'll support and learn from each other through group discussions of work in progress and finished work.

What you'll need

You'll need:

  • a folder
  • A4 paper or notebook
  • pen, pencil, ruler and eraser
  • paper scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • tape measure
  • needles and pins

There's a £5 fee to cover materials used in the first few weeks of your course. 

After that, you need to provide your own fabric, threads and other relevant materials.

You'll get more information as the course progresses.

After the course

On completion, you can progress to other fashion, textiles or crafts courses at City Lit or Morley College.

Former students have started businesses or entered paid and voluntary work.
