For anyone with an interest in learning basic massage techniques. May also be useful for support workers or carers in a home or residential setting.

The tutor is qualified by the ITEC (International Therapy Examination Council), so the course is suitable for a wide range of learners.

What you’ll learn

You will be taught:

  • simple massage techniques to help relieve stress and encourage a sense of well-being (we'll work through clothing and use oils for accessible areas such as feet and hands, and massage can be performed seated in a chair or lying on a massage couch
  • simple chair-based and standing exercises, including posture, alignment, breathing pattern, core strength awareness and stretching with and without exercise bands
  • some basic anatomy, particularly of the back and shoulders, where most tension is held
  • simple mindfulness techniques to promote wellbeing

How the course is taught

Through practical, hands-on learning and participation in a relaxed and supportive environment.

You should inform the tutor of any issues that may affect your participation beforehand, if possible, or at the start of the class. Also, alert us in advance of any allergies, as essential oils will be used.

The course will finish with a mindfulness section. This will include breathing, stretching and a guided visualization.

What you'll need

You should bring:

  • comfortable clothes, training shoes and a bottle of water
  • massage oil or lotion
  • a towel

After the course

You will be able to carry out simple massages.
