Design and make

Take your pattern-making skills to the next level by learning how to make a bespoke garment from scratch.

Timetable, cost and enrolling

Take your pattern-making skills to the next level by learning how to make a bespoke garment from scratch.

You need to have completed our pattern manipulation course, or have some experience working with commercial patterns.

Become more confident at manipulating patterns, while improving your sewing planning and time management skills.

On completion, you can progress to further fashion, textiles or crafts courses with us, at City Lit or Morley College.

Former students have gone on to start businesses, or have moved into paid and voluntary work.

What you’ll learn

You'll learn how to:

  • use body measurements to cut a basic block
  • style a basic pattern block
  • make a toile from the styled pattern block
  • adjust a toile to fit
  • transfer toile adjustments onto a paper pattern

How it's taught

The course is tutor-led with demonstrations, samples, and one-to-one support.

You'll support and learn from each other through group discussions on work in progress and finished work.

What you'll need

You should bring:

  • a folder
  • A4 paper or notebook
  • pen, pencil, ruler and eraser
  • a garment to copy or alter
  • fabrics
  • paper scissors
  • fabric scissors
  • tape measure
  • pins

There's a £5 fee to cover materials used in the first few weeks of your course.

After that, you need to provide your own fabric, threads and other relevant materials.

You'll get more information as the course progresses.
