Basic sewing skills are an advantage but not essential. This course is suitable for all levels of experience.
Become more confident with pattern-cutting, while improving your sewing planning and time management skills.
On completion, you can progress to other fashion, textiles or crafts courses at City Lit or Morley College.
Former students have started businesses, or entered paid and voluntary work.
What you’ll learn
You'll learn how to:
- take body measurements for children
- record body measurements
- read and follow simple commercial pattern instructions
- lay pattern pieces onto fabric
- cut garment pieces
- prepare and use a sewing machine
- sew up your garment
- work with a range of fabrics
- add fun trimmings to your garment
More advanced learners can explore:
- selecting more advanced patterns
- how to adapt patterns
How it's taught
The course is tutor-led, with demonstrations, samples, and one-to-one support.
You'll support and learn from each other through group discussions of work in progress and finished work.

- a folder
- A4 paper or notebook
- pen, pencil, ruler and eraser
- paper scissors
- fabric scissors
- tape measure
- needles and pins
There's a £5 fee to cover materials used in the first few weeks of your course.
After that, you need to provide your own fabric, threads and other relevant materials.
