Following the start of a brand new year, RJ4All is launching a new series of Speak Up! Events for 2025. Our first event, taking place on February 25, will address the use of our democratic voice.

Recent local elections have revealed a low, yet increasingly concerning, decline in turnout. Furthermore, members of our community have repeatedly expressed their distrust in local authorities. This is concerning and needs to be challenged. Decreasing turnouts are a sign of this lack of trust in local powers, a feeling of not being well represented, and, more importantly, the feeling that our participation in democratic processes won’t make any difference. This is a vicious circle that needs to be tackled and challenged through contrastive dialogues at the local level. 

Through this Speak Up! Community Circle, we want to explore the factors undermining democratic engagement. By giving a voice to our local people and authorities, we look forward to a dialogue that enables both parties to learn from each other and understand the important role of elections, whether general or local, in our democratic country.

📊 How confident are you to engage in democratic processes on a scale of 1-5?

🚧 What are the biggest barriers to democratic participation?

🔍 What do you believe are the key factors behind low and declining democratic engagement? What needs to be done to address them?

🏡 How can we, as a community, work together to improve democratic participation?

This is more than just a discussion—it’s a chance to take action. By bringing together local people and decision-makers, we’ll challenge the cycle of disengagement and work towards a democracy that truly represents us all.
