Southwark Internships: Shape future paths to success

Ben Millis

Ben Millis

My name is Ben Millis, I’m 22 years old, and I’m an intern with the Local Economy Team. I  have grown up in Southwark and lived here for most of my life. I recently graduated from the  University of Bristol, where I read Politics and International Relations. I generally focused my studies on civil-military relations in Latin America, and I was also interested in Russian and Chinese politics.

Although my degree had a global approach, I have become very interested in the wellbeing of my local community, and I am particularly interested in tackling unemployment. I want to help people not just get into work, but get good work that is fulfilling, sustainable, and that pays well. I know how difficult it can be to find work under today’s circumstances, and I want to do what I can to help other young people. I am also interested in preventing crime and improving access to education. In the long term, I want to work in the public sector and support my local community, and I believe that this internship is the best way to start.

Before joining the internship program, I got some experience in journalism where I wrote articles for CityAM. I am a big football fan, supporting Tottenham Hotspur and Southwark’s biggest club Dulwich Hamlet. I also like athletics, history (especially 19th Century Europe and medieval England) and anything to do with the sea.
