Overview of Elephant and Castle regeneration
We are leading a 15 year regeneration programme in the Elephant and Castle area. The programme began in 2010 and has an overall budget of £4 billion.
Visit the website for the Elephant and Castle Partnership for details and regular updates on progress. The website has an interactive map that shows all the regeneration projects in the neighbourhood.
Homes
We are constructing at least 5,000 new homes, at least 1,650 of which will be affordable. Across the borough, we are adding 11,000 council homes, including in Elephant and Castle. New council flats have already been completed at St Mary’s Churchyard.
Shopping centre
The shopping centre in Elephant and Castle was closed for redevelopment in autumn 2020. This is part of our plan for a new, pedestrian-friendly town centre.
Jobs
Job opportunities are on the rise with 10,000 new jobs being created. Lendlease alone is set to provide 6,000 construction jobs, plus thousands of training and apprenticeship opportunities.
Transport
We are putting more than £140 million into transport upgrades. Already, we've revamped the road system, filled in the subways and added new cycle lanes. Plus, a new ticket hall is in the works for the Northern Line tube station.
Leisure
Education and culture are getting a £240 million boost. A new £20 million leisure centre was finished in 2016 for everyone to enjoy.
Parks
Green spaces are also a priority. We are planting 1,200 trees in Elephant and Castle to make the area greener for everyone.
We have built three new public squares and are investing £6 million to enhance local parks. Elephant Park, central London’s first major new park in decades, is now open.
Elephant Park is globally recognised as a carbon-positive development. It is one of only 18 projects included in the Clinton Climate Positive Development programme.
