Waste management for new developments

What architects and property developers must consider when designing new residential buildings. Consult with the council first.

All new residential developments in the borough must include appropriate provision for the storage and collection of household waste and recycling.

Architects and property developers should consult with us at the initial planning stage.

When designing you must consider:

  • easy and safe access to waste bins, including for the elderly and those with disabilities
  • easy and safe access for waste collectors
  • location, space and type of containers
  • protecting against animals scavenging waste
  • aesthetics of the development
  • noise, for example glass handling
  • ease of maintenance, including cleaning
  • fire and smoke safety
  • lighting
  • ventilation
  • sound insulation
  • any special requirements, for example, separate storage and collection of bulky waste
