Early payment of preserved benefits

You may apply to receive early payment of your preserved benefits in the following situations.

You are over 60

If you are not yet 60 and your retirement date is due, you may still choose to receive your preserved benefits. As this is an early payment, your benefit will reduce.

This option needs no employer's consent. It will be processed as soon as your request is received.

You are over 50

You may apply for early payment of your benefits on compassionate or financial hardship grounds once you are 50. The council must consent. They can decide if any benefit cuts apply.

Write to the pensions office, explaining your situation and reasons. Then, wait for the council's decision.

You suffer ill health

You can access your benefits early due to ill health, regardless of age. Write to the pensions office explaining your situation. After they receive your letter, they'll send you forms to complete. We will contact your doctor. You must cooperate with our occupational health team.
