Rough sleepers sheltering in commercial bins

How to prevent harm to rough sleepers who shelter in commercial bins.

We work with local businesses to raise awareness of the risks to rough sleepers seeking shelter in large commercial bins.

In the UK, between 2009 and 2015, 11 people are known to have died when they were inadvertently tipped into waste collection compacters.

You can use several resources to help prevent this happening at your business, including:

  • leaflets with practical advice on how businesses can reduce their risk and better manage bin stores
  • bin stickers to remind waste contractors to check bins before emptying them into vehicles

You can also download posters to:

  • help staff recognise signs of rough sleeping
  • remind them to check their bins regularly and be extra vigilant in cold weather
  • give staff outreach and support services to enable reporting of the signs of rough sleeping
