Scrap metal collector and site licence

You need a licence to deal in metals, scrap metals or car salvage.

Apply for or renew a scrap metal licence

Before you apply

1. You must first apply for a basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to get a copy of your criminal record. Visit the GOV.UK website to request a basic DBS check. If you already have a DBS certificate, it must be no more than 3 months old.

2. You must also complete a tax check for a scrap metal licence.

3. You’ll also need:

  • 2 passport-sized photos with a white background (one must be signed and dated by an approved professional)
  • proof of your right to work in the UK, such as a current passport or birth certificate
  • a relevant environmental permit, exemption or registration
  • proof of home address, such as a utility bill or bank statement
