Recognise child abuse

Protecting children is everyone’s responsibility. Learn about the signs of abuse and the myths of reporting it.

Types of abuse

If a child is in immediate danger call 999.

Harmful actions toward children include:

  • physical abuse like hitting or using objects that cause injury
  • neglect, like failing to provide essential care and supervision
  • sexual abuse, like inappropriate sexual behaviour or exposing a child to adult content
  • emotional harm, like constant criticism, exposure to conflict, or forcing them to keep secrets
  • child sexual exploitation and grooming
  • bullying including cyberbullying

Signs of abuse

Look for changes in a child's appearance, behaviour or communication. 

The NSPCC lists more types and signs of child abuse.
