The Empowering Communities programme

Overview

We want our residents to feel that they can make a difference. If there are matters that are important to you and your neighbourhood, there are opportunities for you to get involved.

The Empowering Communities programme brings local communities together, to focus on the issues specific to neighbourhoods, and facilitate communication between residents and councillors. It is aimed at anyone who lives, studies or works in Southwark.

The Empowering Communities areas are:

  • North East: North Bermondsey; South Bermondsey; Rotherhithe; Surrey Docks
  • North West: Borough & Bankside; London Bridge & West Bermondsey; Chaucer; St Georges
  • East Central: Old Kent Rd; Peckham; Nunhead & Queens Rd; Rye Lane; Peckham Rye
  • West Central: North Walworth; Newington; Faraday; Camberwell Green; St Giles
  • South: Champion Hill; Goose Green; Dulwich Hill; Dulwich Village; Dulwich Wood

Search your area and ward to find out more, sign up to Empowering Communities news alerts and find out when the next meeting takes place.

Each Empowering Communities area has a Community Champion. They organise an annual residents’ conference - an opportunity to see the big picture, with local issues addressed in the context of Southwark as a whole. The event is open to all Southwark residents.

The programme also offers two funding streams: the Democracy Fund and Neighbourhoods Fund for community projects.
