Your legal responsibilities
You have a legal responsibility if things go wrong at an event, particularly if there are defects in its planning or control.
It is not the responsibility of the police to look after public safety at an event. The police are responsible for:
- maintaining the peace
- preventing breaches of the law
- taking action against criminal behaviour
It is a good idea to:
- familiarise yourself with health and safety guidance on events
- have access to a safety advisor
- get public liability insurance if you’re hiring one of Southwark's public outdoor spaces
