Register a stillbirth

If the baby was born showing any signs of life, you must register both the baby's birth and death separately within 42 days.

A stillborn baby is a child that is born with no signs of life after the 24th week of pregnancy. A stillbirth should be registered within 42 days.

You can register a stillbirth if you are:

  • the mother
  • the father, and are married to the baby's mother
  • a person present at the stillbirth
  • the person who found the stillborn child

The doctor or midwife who attended the birth will issue a medical certificate. It will say the baby was stillborn. They'll also do this if they examine the baby's body after the stillbirth.

The person registering the stillbirth must take this certificate to the registrar's office. The stillbirth is then added to the stillbirth register, which the person registering the stillbirth then signs.

You can register at the Southwark Register Office after making an appointment. If you decide to register at any other register office in England and Wales, you'll need to make 'a declaration'.

A certificate of stillbirth ordered and paid for at the time of making the declaration, and funeral documentation will be posted to you.
