In 2020, as part of the wider Dulwich Streetspace programme, temporary traffic filters were placed on:
- Melbourne Grove north
- Melbourne Grove south
- Derwent Grove
- Elsie Road
- Tintagel Crescent
These are key routes connecting people to local schools and the station.
The filters have been made permanent. We are now exploring enhancements to the public realm. This is part of our Streets for People ambition that will:
- encourage active travel and create safer walking and cycling routes
- make our streets a greener and more climate resilient environment
- encourage social interaction and provide space to sit and relax
- create a better place for all who live, work study and visit the area
Our proposal
We're working on revising our proposal following the public consultation in Jan to Feb 2024.
Our proposal includes:
- extending the footway and raising the loading bay to footway level on Grove Vale
- raising the side road to improve conditions for pedestrians at the junction with Railway Rise
- a new zebra crossing across Grove Vale
- landscaping and tree planting at junctions with Melbourne Grove, Derwent Grove and Elsie Road
- extending the footway over side roads with access maintained for cyclists and emergency vehicles at junctions with Melbourne Grove, Derwent Grove and Elsie Road
- a modal filter allowing cyclists and emergency vehicles only
This will result in:
- good quality accessible space with more trees, greenery and seating
- wider and more direct pedestrian crossings
- separating pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
- reducing speed through traffic calming
- more cycle parking
- a virtual loading bay (which can be booked by companies delivering goods)
Next steps
We aim to start construction in early 2025.
