Disabled parking bays

Information about disabled parking bays in Southwark.

Disabled parking bays are highway or off-street bays reserved for vehicles where a Blue Badge and its holder are present.

If you are a Blue Badge holder without off-street parking, you can apply for a disabled parking bay on the highway. There is no charge to have a disabled parking bay installed on the highway.

Current disabled parking bays

You can view a map of disabled parking bays in Southwark. This includes the location of new bays currently being considered for implementation.

The map also identifies the short-stay disabled parking bays installed near shops and in town centres. These bays usually have a maximum stay of 4 hours.

The majority of the disabled parking bays were installed in response to residents applying for a bay to be installed outside their home.

Applying for a disabled parking bay on the highway

To qualify for a disabled bay, applicants must be in receipt of either:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Higher Rate Mobility
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP) mobility component with 8 points or more for ‘moving around’

All other applicants, including blue badge holders who are not in receipt of the above benefits, may be referred for an Occupational Therapy Assessment.

A disabled bay will not be approved if:

  • there's already a garage or driveway space (with some exceptions, such as a vehicle fitted with a disability modification being too big for the garage or driveway space)
  • it's only required for picking up or setting down passengers
  • the driver of the vehicle does not reside at the address
  • it's used less than four days a week on average throughout the year
  • there is not a recognisable parking problem, subject to the degree of mobility of the applicant
  • the road is not a public highway
  • road safety is adversely affected

There may be special cases which won’t be covered by these guidelines. These cases will be assessed on an individual basis after discussions with the Disabilities and Community Council.

The process to add a disabled parking bay can take up to a year. It may take longer if we receive an objection during the consultation stage. We will keep you updated if this happens.

Removing a disabled parking bay

If you think that a disabled parking bay is no longer in use, email us at highways@southwark.gov.uk and we will investigate.

You must not park in the bay until all signs and lines have been removed, even if you think it is not being used. Otherwise you may receive a parking ticket.

If you have a disabled parking bay and no longer require it, email us at highways@southwark.gov.uk and we will remove the bay. A redundant street bay can be frustrating for others who want to park there.
