How we're making streets better for walking

We want to encourage more residents and visitors to travel around Southwark on foot. But we need to make sure there are pleasant and safe spaces to do that. So we’re improving streets and shared spaces. So far we’ve:

  • widened and repaved footways
  • improved pedestrian crossings
  • improved accessibility through step-free access
  • removed obsolete signs, poles, columns and railings
  • planted trees and planting on streets
  • adding seating
  • removed ‘blind corners’ – a corner on a road where the view of what is behind it is obstructed
  • added more street maps and signs
  • increased street lighting for pedestrians

We also have the support of the Mayor of London’s Walking Action Plan to make London more pedestrian friendly.

Public maps

Transport for London research has shown that one in four people are concerned about getting lost, which is a barrier to walking.

Legible London install public maps and signs on the streets for pedestrians. Maps include pavements, crossings and shortcuts. You’ll find these maps around Southwark.
