Independent travel training

Find training to help someone with a learning difficulty or disability to travel more independently.

Independent travel training is aimed at people with a learning difficulty or a disability.

The goal is to increase independence and:

  • provide greater freedom
  • encourage using your own initiative
  • become less reliant on friends and family
  • boost self confidence

We offer two types of training to people who want to learn to travel independently:

  • the independent travel training bus for young people and adults
  • A to B independent travel training for children and young people aged 16 to 18.

TfL Travel Mentoring Service also offers training for adults.

The independent travel training bus

This is free travel training for young people and adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities.

It is a 90-minute interactive journey. Participants go on a bus where they receive training on:

  • personal safety
  • road safety
  • London's bus network

The bus starts from the bus stop located in the car park of Tesco on Old Kent Road.

Morning sessions run from 10.15am to 12 midday. Afternoon sessions run from 12.30pm to 2pm.

The programme was developed with The Metropolitan Police Safer Transport Team, Arriva, TfL Travel Mentoring Service and Parent Partnership.
