Laws protect conservation areas because of their unique or historical architectural character and appearance. We make sure these areas are preserved and enhanced through the planning process.
There are 48 conservation areas in Southwark. Use Southwark Maps to view them.
An Article 4 direction covers several conservation areas. This means that alterations to buildings and other changes will need planning permission.
Southwark’s CAAG is made of representatives from local historical, civic and amenity groups. The group provides regular guidance on planning applications. These may affect the look of our conservation areas.
