East Dulwich - Streets for People

About the project

In 2020, as part of the wider Dulwich Streetspace programme, temporary traffic filters were placed in the following locations:

  • Melbourne Grove north
  • Melbourne Grove south
  • Derwent Grove
  • Elsie Road
  • Tintagel Crescent

The locations have been selected as they are key routes for people travelling to the local schools and station.

The traffic filters have since been made permanent and we are now exploring enhancements to the public realm. This is part of the council’s Streets for People ambition that will:

  • encourage active travel and create safer walking and cycling routes
  • make our streets a more greener and climate resilient environment
  • encourage social interaction and provide space to sit and relax
  • a better place for all who live, work study and visit

Our proposal

We are now working on revising our proposal following the public feedback received during the consultation in January to February 2024.

Our proposal includes:

  • good quality space, accessible for all
  • wider and more direct pedestrian crossings and a new zebra crossing
  • separating pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
  • reducing speed through traffic calming
  • more cycle parking and virtual loading bay
  • more trees and greenery
  • outdoor seating

What is next

Feedback from this consultation will inform the formal decision-making process around summer 2024.

There will be an opportunity to comment on the statutory elements of the project during the statutory consultation phase in summer 2024.

We aim to commence construction in early 2025.
