Who this support is for

Find out what a carer is and how we support them. How to request a carer's assessment. Know your rights.

Financial support

It can be expensive looking after someone but financial support is available:

  • check if you’re eligible for Carer’s Allowance
  • Carer’s Credit is a National Insurance credit that helps with gaps in your National Insurance record if you’re caring for someone at least 20 hours a week

Council Tax Reduction for carers

You may be eligible for a reduction in Council Tax, also called 'Council Tax support' or being 'disregarded for Council Tax', if you’re:

  • a live-in carer
  • are not the spouse or partner of the person you care for

You do not have to claim Carer's Allowance to qualify for this discount, and your income and savings will not affect your eligibility.

Check if you’re eligible for the Council Tax Reduction scheme or if you can get money off your bill.
