Food hygiene inspections

Overview

Our environmental health officers (EHOs) or food safety officers can enter and inspect food premises at any reasonable time. They do not have to make an appointment or let you know they’re coming.

They will :

  • check you’re following proper food hygiene rules

  • send you a food hygiene rating after the inspection

Officers should show their identification before attempting to gain access to premises. 

How often we visit depends on:  

  • what type of food you handle
  • people at risk, for example under 5s, over 65s or customers with a suppressed immune system
  • how you manage the business
  • the condition of the premises at the time of the last inspection
