Food hygiene ratings

Which businesses get a rating and what the ratings mean. How to display the rating, appeal a rating or request a hygiene rating revisit.

Appeal a food hygiene rating

If you think the rating given to your business is unfair or wrong, discuss the rating with the food safety officer who did the inspection.

The inspector will explain why the rating was given and provide advice about improving the rating in the future.

If you still feel the rating does not reflect your hygiene standards and management controls you have 21 days to appeal in writing. This begins with the day you receive the letters and includes weekends and bank holidays.

Right to reply

You have a 'right to reply' which will be published on the website with the score. This will let you explain:

  • action you’ve taken to improve food standards
  • how you’re now following the rules
  • why the rules weren't being followed when the inspection happened
