Container licence

You will need a licence to place a container on the public highway.

You'll need a licence to put a container for construction works on the public highway.

Store containers on your own private land whenever possible so you do not have to get a licence. We can turn down container licence applications if the proposed site is unsuitable.

Before you start

You’ll need the following documents before you apply for a container licence:

  • a copy of your company's public liability insurance
  • company bank details, VAT number and company number on letter headed paper
  • all relevant site plans or diagrams, including traffic order pedestrian management plans
  • confirmation of any road closures, parking bay suspensions and planning permissions applied for

Applying for a licence

Send your completed application to the address on the form.

You must apply for the licence at least 15 working days before works are due to start. 

Licences last 4 weeks. To extend one, you must reapply 14 days before the current licence expiry date.

Fees

  • £367.10 a month

Conditions

We'll inspect your site regularly to make sure you meet our terms and conditions, which you will agree to during your application.
