Archaeology

Our knowledge of Southwark's early history is mainly due to the work of archaeologists.

Developers must report possible archaeological finds to our Archaeology Service. The service monitors and coordinates excavations and looks after ancient monuments in Southwark.

Where to see archaeological finds

Many archaeological finds were made at excavations in Southwark in the 60s and 70s. The building of London Bridge, the embankment of the Thames and other major works uncovered finds during the Victorian period.
