The Mayflower

The Mayflower was a ship whose historic voyage is rooted in Southwark’s history.

Around Southwark you can find buildings, street names and historical locations that are connected to the Mayflower.

For example, Rotherhithe in Southwark was central to the start of the Mayflower’s journey, the home of the captain and many members of the ship’s crew, and the site of their return.

The Mayflower sailed from England to America in 1620 carrying a range of passengers, some of whom were English Puritans fleeing religious persecution. The story resonates with contemporary themes of migration, tolerance and religious freedom.
