Why we tackle tenancy fraud
Social housing is a limited and valuable asset.
Tenancy fraud:
- reduces the availability of council housing
- increases waiting list times for those in need waiting to be housed
- increases costs to the council as they have to provide temporary accommodation
Risks to the community
Tenancy fraud can harm communities and stop them from thriving. It can lead to:
- anti-social behaviour
- homes being modified without our permission, which can increase risks of disrepair, leaks and other health and safety issues
Risks for people living in sublet council properties
People who occupy sublet council properties are at risk because:
- their deposits are not secured and protected by law
- they could face short notice and illegal eviction and homelessness
