Apply for a council home

Overview

There can be a long wait for a council home. Even people in the greatest need can face several years’ wait before they get housed.

Consider other options like moving into private rented accommodation in cheaper areas.

If you need to be rehoused, consider downsizing or swapping homes.

If you cannot stay in your current home and if you’re eligible, we’ll help you:

  • find out if renting a council and housing association home is an option
  • register and bid for a council or housing association property

First, you’ll need to get on our housing register.

Watch our short video on how to apply for social housing.

If you're already joined the housing register, visit the Homesearch website. Available properties will be advertised each week.

If you're in immediate risk of becoming homeless, read our guide.

If you want to buy a home of your own, but cannot afford to buy on the open market, find out what help is on offer.
