Keeping children and young people safe

Your child’s life, and yours, could be at risk if they:

  • leave their phone, tablet or laptop charging on their bed
  • use a cheap unbranded charger
  • sleep with their phone under their pillow
  • leave clothes or other materials on electrical devices such as games consoles
  • charge devices unattended or overnight
  • are not fully dry after bathing or showering when using an electrical device – water and electricity are a lethal combination

When a device like a phone or a tablet, is covered by bedding or under a pillow, there is nowhere for the generated heat to go. It will become hotter and the heat caused by the device, combined with flammable materials, could cause a fire.

Never charge phones, tablets or any electrical device on your bed, under a pillow or anywhere the device might overheat.

A device can become very dangerous, very quickly even if it is manufactured to the correct safety standards.
