East Dulwich projects

How we're making streets healthier and greener in East Dulwich.

Construction update

Construction works for the East Dulwich area improvements project began on 24 March 2025. The project is expected to run from late March through to mid-July 2025.

The proposal aligns with our Streets for People ambition and includes:

  • extending the footway and raising the loading bay to footway level on Grove Vale providing more accessible space for pedestrians
  • continuous and extended footways at the junctions providing more space for pedestrians and encouraging active travel
  • a new zebra crossing across Grove Vale to provide more accessible and direct crossings
  • green spaces and tree planting at junctions with Melbourne Grove, Derwent Grove and Elsie Road to provide canopy cover during hot weather and make the environment more resilient to climate change
  • seating to provide stop and rest spaces

We have produced some visualisations of the proposal

The works will be carried out in six phases.

Phase 1, outside East Dulwich Station to Railway Rise: 24 March to 4 April 2025

Phase 2, outside 24 Grove Vale to 34 Grove Vale: 7 April to 6 May 2025

Phase 3A, outside 32 Grove Vale to 40 Grove Vale: 7 April to 23 May 2025

Phase 3B, outside 29 Grove Vale to 33 Grove Vale: 26 April to 3 June 2025

Phase 4, outside 56 Grove Vale to 60 Grove Vale: 4 April to 26 June 2025

Phase 5, Outside 96 Grove Vale to 98 Grove Vale: 27 June to 9 July 2025

Phase 6, outside 63 Grove Vale to 65 Grove Vale: 10 July to 18 July 2025

A works letter was sent out to local residents and businesses notifying them of the upcoming works.

Impact of works

There may be some delays during the works, but pedestrian access will remain open and cyclists will have a designated diversion route to ensure safe travel.

Background

In 2020, as part of the wider Dulwich Streetspace programme, temporary traffic filters were placed on:

  • Melbourne Grove north
  • Melbourne Grove south
  • Derwent Grove
  • Elsie Road
  • Tintagel Crescent.

A decision was made in July 2024 to proceed with the permanent improvements. Read the full decision report
