Browning Street

We’ve been working to make Browning Street a more vibrant, people-friendly space. We've worked closely with:

  • local residents
  • businesses
  • stakeholders

Their input has been vital in shaping our vision for Browning Street.

Key objectives

We aim to improve Browning Street by making it:

  • easier to cross and walk
  • safer for cycling
  • great for local businesses
  • welcoming and safer for everyone
  • healthier, with cleaner air

Final design

After working closely with the community, we have now finalised the proposed designs for Browning Street.

Email highways@southwark.gov.uk for a copy of the proposed designs.

Liverpool Grove public realm improvement scheme

As part of the Walworth Low-Emission Neighbourhood scheme, Liverpool Grove was identified as a good location for a people-friendly new community space.

We carried out an initial engagement exercise where we set these key objectives:

  • make Liverpool Grove a more attractive and pleasant place
  • make the street greener, cleaner and safer
  • enhance the view of St Peter’s Church
  • support local businesses
  • make walking and cycling safer and more enjoyable

We've worked closely with the community to transform Liverpool Grove.

Construction on this scheme was completed in December 2022.

Balfour Street

This scheme aimed to make Balfour Street and surrounding roads safer, more accessible and more attractive for all road users. Work on this scheme is now complete.

Works included:

  • widening and resurfacing the footway with high quality paving
  • planting new trees and improving the conditions of existing trees
  • traffic calming changes on junctions with Munton Road, John Maurice Close, Henshaw Street, Victory Place, Chatham Street, Wadding Street, Stead Street and Orb Street
  • transforming the junction with Rodney Road to improve safety
  • improved street lighting

Walworth pocket parks

We are replacing temporary planters in Walworth and transforming the spaces into pocket parks (small parks) that will:

  • encourage young people to go outside and play
  • provide a place to socialise, help build stronger communities and enhance mental wellbeing
  • help create safe walking and cycling routes across Walworth
  • make our streets greener and more resilient to extreme weather

Phase 1

Phase 1 includes developing locations that are on key routes for young people on their journey to schools and parks across the Newington ward. These are:

  • Alberta Street, junction with Braganza Street
  • Alberta Street, junction with Ambergate Street
  • Amelia Street, junction with Penton Place
  • Chapter Road, junction with Lorrimore Square

Construction

The construction works for the Walworth Pocket Parks are currently ongoing and aim to finish in early 2025. FM Conway have completed all major works. Works which will be completed soon are:

  • installation of a new park gate at Amelia Street
  • play features to be installed at Alberta Street, Braganza Street and Chapter Road
  • shrubs to be planted at all sites

The construction works for Walworth Planters have been approved by cabinet members and work aims to begin in February 2025.

Phase 2

Phase 2 developments include:

  • Iliffe Street, junction with Penton Place
  • Merrow Street, junction with Lytham Street

  • new tree planting for shade and to enhance the local environment
  • seating to help people relax and share the space – or for parents waiting for their children

  • widening pavements to shorten crossing distances
  • crossing points on all four arms of the junction
  • changing priority from Merrow Street to Lytham Street, to slow vehicles down and draw drivers' attention to the restriction on Merrow Street
  • extra cycle parking

Consultation will begin in February 2025
