Rye Lane

Rye Lane (between Peckham High Street and Hanover Park) is currently one way north for buses and two way for cyclists under a permanent traffic order. The southbound cycle lane has generated complaints as is it felt by some that it is not clearly defined.

We are designing a scheme to address some of the issues raised by residents. The objectives for this scheme are to:

  • improve cycle safety
  • improve street design for those walking, cycling and wheeling
  • assess the COVID-19 Measures that are still in place

Consultation

We are conducting public consultation until 10 November 2024. Your feedback will inform our next design stage.

Scheme background

Rye Lane (between Hanover Park and Copeland Road) was closed to traffic on 6 July 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Large numbers of people were unable to safely social distance despite the early action we took to increase space for pedestrians.

Residents were concerned about how far away the buses were stopping, so the road was reopened to buses and bicycles traveling in both directions. This happened on 18 October 2021 under an 18 month experimental traffic order. We held a public consultation to help us decide whether these measures should be made permanent, permanent with modifications or removed.

Considering the 1,585 responses received, we decided to:

  • make the two-way bus arrangement on Rye Lane permanent
  • retain loading and unloading for other motor vehicles from 7am to 10am Monday to Sunday
