Planning permission for the tunnel
The project is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), so permission had to be given by the Secretaries of State, not Southwark Council. This happened in September 2014.
As part of the planning consent, Tideway entered a legal agreement with us to lessen the impact of the construction on the community. The legal agreement is called a Unilateral Undertaking. This is part of Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act.

The agreement includes:
- over £5 million for local infrastructure projects
- a £1 million community enhancement fund for projects suggested by local people
- local employment and skills opportunities for residents in Southwark
- terms of reference for a Community Liaison Working Group for residents
