Problems with noise and nuisances

How we investigate a complaint

We are required to look into complaints about noise if:

  • it unreasonably and substantially interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home or other premises
  • an injury might be caused

After you tell us about a noise, we'll:

  • call you back to check if the noise is still happening
  • arrange a time to visit (we'll wear ID badges when we do) so we can assess the noise

Usually, if we can establish the noise source, we'll ask for it to be reduced. If the noise is a nuisance we may take action to get the person causing it to stop.

If the noise is something we cannot deal with, such as footsteps, you can take action. Visit Citizens Advice for more information on how to take legal action. We'll also pass on your complaint to a more appropriate council team.

In some instances, mediation may help. Your neighbour may genuinely be unaware that their daily activities are negatively impacting you. Discussing the problem with them calmly may quickly resolve the issue, as they may be able to do something differently. There are also professional mediators who will help you with this. If you're a tenant, contact your landlord, who may be able to assist with the mediation process.
