We are required to look into complaints about noise if it unreasonably and substantially interferes with the use or enjoyment of your home or other premises.
After you tell us about a noise:
- we'll call you back to see if the noise is still happening
- if it is, visit you (we'll wear ID badges) to assess the noise within your home
- if we find the source of the noise, we'll ask for it to be reduced
If the noise is a nuisance we may take action to get the person causing it to stop.
If the noise is something we cannot deal with, like footsteps, you can take your own action.
Visit Citizens Advice for more information on how to take legal action.
We'll also pass on your complaint to a more appropriate council team.
In some instances, mediation may help. Your neighbour may genuinely be unaware that their daily activities are negatively impacting you.
Discussing the problem with them calmly may quickly resolve the issue. They may be able to do something differently.
There are also professional mediators who will help you with this.
If you're a tenant, contact your landlord. They may be able to help with the mediation process.
