Fire safety

Find out what we do to keep our housing safe and get tips on fire prevention.

Fire safety and cladding

After the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, we understand you may be concerned about the cladding used on Southwark properties.

We have team of 15 fire safety officers, some former firefighters who:

  • do fire risk assessments on each building
  • identify fire prevention work they may need

Most of the cladding systems on Southwark’s estate blocks were installed to improve insulation. This cladding is called External Wall Insulation (EWI). EWI meets all required standards and is very different to the product used at Grenfell Tower. This is a solid insulation to the façade with no air gaps.

Our council tower blocks do not have the same cladding system. But we do have some aluminium or similar facing. We are investigating this on some of our lower blocks and arranging urgent checks to see whether to take further action.
