Fire safety

Find out what we do to keep our housing safe and get tips on fire prevention.

Smoke alarms

We’ve made sure that every council owned property has heat and smoke alarms installed in every habitable room.

Test your smoke detectors weekly.  If you do not have a smoke detector contact the London Fire Brigade on 0800 028 4428.  They'll fit one for free and give you home fire safety advice.

We’ve installed smoke alarms in the communal areas of our  purpose-built flats and buildings converted into self-contained flats.

In some Southwark properties, there are no communal smoke alarms because:

  • they can lead to false alarms
  • if they are set off, it could mean there is fire or smoke in the escape route, so residents evacuating their properties could use an escape route that is not safe and get in the way of firefighters

In some cases we have installed communal smoke alarms detectors at a block of flats.

These are to operate Automatic Smoke Control (AOV)s. They activate when the emergency services open or knock down a door to put out the fire.

If you're a landlord, you must install smoke and CO detection units on your property by law.
