We're building a new community space at the heart of Dulwich Village. We consulted with residents to develop our plans.
This follows the decision to make the traffic filter at the junction of Calton Avenue, Court Lane and Dulwich Village permanent. The project supports our Streets for People strategy.
Work began on 15 July 2024 and most of it is expected to be completed in November 2024.
The work aims to:
- increase walking and cycling in the area
- create spaces that everyone can safely enjoy
The work includes:
- wider pavement on Turney Road next to Dulwich Village C of E Infants' School
- new, wider and more direct pedestrian crossings
- natural paving on Dulwich Village and Calton Avenue
- a rain garden along Dulwich Village
- two tree pits at the new public square area on Calton Avenue
- public green space next to the shops on Calton Avenue
- improvements to the cycle track with granite setts
- green spaces to support biodiversity
- sustainable urban design works on Calton Avenue
Improvements to the Red Post Hill/Dulwich Village junction are likely to be completed in early 2025.
How the work will impact residents
There will be a cycling diversion and temporary pedestrian crossing. You will have access to local shops at all times.
We sent a works notification letter to residents and stakeholders. You can also download:
How we used your feedback
We held 3 phases of public engagement, starting in summer 2022. We revised our proposals after the phase 2 consultation in winter 2022 to address:
- safety for vulnerable road users
- reducing traffic congestion along Dulwich Village
- improving the quality of the public space on Calton Avenue
- pedestrian improvements
- reducing for northbound congestion at the Dulwich Village / Red Post Hill junction
A lot of your responses suggested banning vehicle access along Turney Road from the junction with Dulwich Village. We considered these alongside the traffic data and survey work and decided vehicle access had to be kept along this section of Turney Road.
We have looked at other opportunities to improve the street environment here, supporting the needs of local pupils, pedestrians and cyclists.
