Dulwich Village

An accessible space for active travel at the heart of Dulwich Village.

We're working with residents to build a new community space at the heart of Dulwich Village.

This follows the decision to make the traffic filter at the junction of Calton Avenue, Court Lane and Dulwich Village permanent.

The project is part of our Streets for People strategy, which aims to:

  • increase walking and cycling in the area
  • create spaces that everyone can safely enjoy

Dulwich Village project update: Works now complete

We are excited to announce that the Dulwich Village project has now been completed! The roadblock has been removed, and emergency vehicles now have full access through the square.

Ongoing improvements and developments

While the project is complete, we continue to monitor and evaluate the improvements to ensure they meet safety and functionality standards. We are committed to delivering the highest quality work and keeping the community informed every step of the way.

Current updates

Lighting

We’ve made significant progress on improving the lighting throughout the square, which will enhance safety and create a more inviting space. The work is ongoing, but you’ll begin to see the changes soon. Currently the luminaires installed are the ‘old’ highways luminaires which is a temporary measure due to a delay with the delivery of the new heritage style LED luminaires.

Emergency access

The roadblock has been cleared, allowing emergency vehicles full access through the square.

Pedestrian traffic

We’re thrilled to see the square becoming a popular spot, with an increase in pedestrian traffic observed. This positive change is a clear sign of the square’s growing role as a community hub.

Looking ahead

Though the main elements of the project are complete, we’re still working on a few final touches. We will continue to keep you updated with the latest developments, making sure to share relevant information with you.

Thank you for your continued support.

We’re excited about the improvements made and look forward to sharing more updates with you soon!

How we consulted with residents

Phase 1: information gathering

We started by finding out how accessible the junctions were. We measured this against objectives set by Healthy Streets. This phase included:

  • a design check
  • surveys with residents and school pupils
  • pan-impairment accessibility audit
  • cycling accessibility audit
  • ground investigation and junction survey

Phase 2: concept ideas

In Autumn 2022 we looked at how well the area worked for all kinds of road users through:

  • online and paper surveys
  • door to door survey in Calton Avenue and surrounding streets
  • an on-street information stall
  • workshops with pupils at Alleyn’s School and James Allen’s Girls’ School
  • meetings with residents’ associations, the Dulwich Society, Dulwich Estate and Friends of Dulwich Square
  • engagement with local businesses

The consultation received 1,242 responses. Of the people we spoke to:

  • 86% were residents living in the immediate Dulwich Village area
  • 11% identified as being disabled or having a disability
  • 78% declared that they were car owners or had access to a car

Our revised proposal

In winter 2022 we revised our proposals in light of the phase 2 consultation. We addressed:

  • safety for vulnerable road users
  • reducing traffic congestion along Dulwich Village
  • improving the quality of the public space on Calton Avenue
  • pedestrian improvements
  • reducing for northbound congestion at the Dulwich Village / Red Post Hill junction

A lot of consultation responses suggested banning vehicle access along Turney Road from the junction with Dulwich Village. We considered these alongside traffic data and surveys and decided that vehicle access had to be kept at this location.

We have looked at other opportunities to improve the street environment here, supporting the needs of local pupils, pedestrians and cyclists.

Phase 3: formal consultation

We held a consultation from 7 December 2024 to 17 January 2024. We asked for comments on the features of the Dulwich Village Junction Improvements design.

We received 990 responses.
