Southwark Plan planning policy types
We use the Southwark Plan to guide development in Southwark. It has 6 planning policies:
1. Strategic policies
These policies set out our plan to work with local people to improve neighbourhoods. We also use these policies to set the context for how we manage future local development. They also help us make planning decisions.
Read Southwark Plan: strategic policies (PDF, 435KB).
2. Development management policies
These are the detailed policies which we use to assess planning applications.
Read Southwark Plan: development management policies (176 KB) and their associated validation requirements and document (PDF, 228KB).
Use our validation checklists if you're making a planning application. They tell you what you 'must' and 'should' do before submitting your application.
3. Area visions
Area visions identify the special character of different places in Southwark. They provide the future vision for these places. They also set out improvements we want to make to:
- public spaces
- transport
- infrastructure
They also provide our targets for new homes and jobs in these areas.

4. Site allocations
There are 85 development sites of strategic importance in Southwark. Site allocation policies offer context about each site. They detail how to develop them. View site allocations on Southwark Maps.
Email planningpolicy@southwark.gov.uk to request a copy of the site allocations section of the Southwark Plan.
5.Implementation policies
These policies say how we will use the Southwark Plan. It is our main strategy for planning and regeneration. We use it alongside our development plan, including our Area Action Plans, the London Plan and neighbourhood plans.

6. Planning policy maps
Some planning policies only apply in certain areas, for example, conservation areas. The Planning Policies Map shows the areas where we apply specific planning policies.
