Preventing crime

Find out about the work we do to prevent crime in the borough.

Community wardens

Community wardens and Park Liaison Officers (PLOs) provide a reassuring, uniformed presence to keep people safe. They patrol Southwark's estates, streets, parks and open spaces tackling crime and antisocial behaviour. They take part in targeted patrols and incidents or major events.

Community wardens and PLOs:

  • respond to proactive and reactive concerns for crime, environmental crime and antisocial behaviour
  • remove knives and other weapons from public spaces
  • resolve concerns for welfare and safeguarding
  • support communities through engagement, education and signposting to services
  • take enforcement action with patrols, education, warnings and penalties
  • provide evidence to police and partners
  • support the response to major incidents, emergencies and events
  • are trained in counter terrorism and emergency first aid
  • are part of the police’s Community Safety Accredited Scheme
