Widow's benefits

If a married male pensioner dies leaving a widow whom he married before he retired, she becomes entitled to a widow's pension of:

  • a short-term pension for 3 months equal to the pension and compensation her husband was receiving on his death
  • a long-term pension at the rate on the pensioner's award letter, adjusted for any cost of living increases since her husband retired

If a married male pensioner dies, his widow is entitled to a widow's pension. She married him after he retired. The pension is 1/160th of his pensionable pay for each year and part year of his service after April 5, 1978.
