Types of bike parking and storage

Cycle stands

There are cycle stands throughout Southwark. We use black Sheffield stands (an upturned 'U'), with a fluorescent bar to help the visually impaired. 

Bike lockers on housing estates

There are bike lockers to securely lock up your bike on some housing estates. They are managed by our garages team.

Cycle hangars

Cycle hangars are curved storage units, usually found on housing estates or roads. They are secure units where you can safely park and lock up your bike.

Each unit:

• provides undercover parking for 6 bicycles
• takes up around half the space of a car

Create an account and join the cycle hangar waiting list. 

Since 30 September 2024 we have managed and maintained borough-owned bicycle hangars.

If you have not opted out of this change, as notified by your previous supplier, you'll have been contacted by the council to sign up to our online cycle hangar system.

Ask for new bike parking

You can: 

• request new bike parking in your area at certain times of year by applying to our Cleaner Greener Safer fund
• ask for bike parking facilities on your estate by emailing highways@southwark.gov.uk 

You can also request a new bike hangar. You can gather support when people ‘like’ the location you’ve added to the map. 

We:

• cannot give you an accurate waiting time
• will update you when your request is being looked at
