We worked with Bankside Open Spaces Trust to develop high quality sports facilities on Union Street, along with new greenery and landscaping. The site had been used for a long time by local schools and is a protected space in the Southwark Plan.
The project was developed over time as funding became available. Various options for the space were tested with a steering group of local residents, businesses and schools.
Phase 1
In 2012 the space featured a pop-up Olympics event, including facilities for beach volleyball, football, boxing, table tennis and athletics. It was partly funded as a gift by the developers of the Shard and partly with section 106 funding.
Phase 2
In 2013 we added sports fencing, new mains water and electricity supplies and floodlighting for the football pitch.
Phase 3
We created a new boundary along Union Street and built a basketball court, running track and a space for pop-up events.
