St Thomas Street Social Regeneration Charter

A social regeneration charter sets out the priorities for a neighbourhood that is undergoing regeneration. These are agreed with residents and are focused on making sure the community will benefit from the regeneration.

Our social regeneration charters are directly influenced by the Southwark Conversation in 2017. At this community engagement exercise almost 3,000 residents told us about their views and experiences of regeneration.

Why St Thomas Street needs this charter

The capacity of London Bridge Station has grown from 55 to 90 million passengers a year. This is a big commercial opportunity, so several new developments are being proposed along St Thomas Street. The social regeneration charter will maximise the benefits for local people.

Engagement and research

In 2019 we carried out a social research exercise to record what the area was like before regeneration began. To find out more, download the

The findings were presented at the London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward panel meeting for discussion.

A draft St Thomas Street charter based on the community research was approved by Cabinet on 17 December 2019.

In  2020 we held three tours of the area on the themes of:

  • facilities for young people, including Marlborough Sports Garden and Resonance FM
  • jobs, including Southwark Works and Employ SE1
  • open spaces, with presentations from Bankside Open Spaces Trust and Leathermarket JMB
