How we're making streets better for walking

We want to encourage more residents and visitors to travel around Southwark on foot. But we need to make sure there are pleasant and safe spaces to do that. So we’re improving streets and shared spaces. So far we’ve: widened and repaved footways improved pedestrian crossings improved accessibility through step-free access removed obsolete signs, poles, columns and railings planted trees and planting on streets adding seating removed ‘blind corners’ – a corner on a road where the view of what is behind it is obstructed added more street maps and signs increased street lighting for pedestrians...

If you’re new to walking, a free guided walking group can be a good start. If you’re an experienced walker, you could try a self-led route. Walk London TfL’s Transport for London's Walk London website has a range of walking routes. These include the Green Chain walk which can start or finish at Nunhead Cemetery. Bike marking is when you get a laminated, tamper-resistant warning label to put on your bike to deter thieves. At the same time, your bike gets registered onto an online database. Registering your bike lets police and retailers know who the legitimate owner of a bike is if it is stolen.
