Walworth Road study
In 2014 we commissioned a study into Walworth Road and the surrounding area.
The study looked at:
- the existing strengths and weaknesses of the high street
- opportunities and challenges from ongoing development
Findings
The report found that economic activity was generally healthy and businesses were optimistic. Opportunities were identified, building on the strong assets already in place. These included:
- strengthening East Street Market and the retail environment
- supporting the existing independent retailers
- developing better pedestrian and cycle links between Walworth Road, the surrounding areas and stations
Planning and design considerations were also made to strengthen the high street’s presence.
Improvements
Since the report, improvements have included:
- restoring existing market barrows and providing new replacements
- branded street market furniture, signage, gazebos, and tote bags
- market entrance improvements at Walworth Road with catenary signage and lighting
- a public art commission
- new fence, signage, and seating at the Dawes Street market entrance
- new signage, awnings, repainting, and graphics on East Street shopfronts
- decluttering and better signage for the public toilets on the junction with Portland Street
We are also working with the local community to develop the Walk Elephant initiative. This will secure more funding to improve the street scene and trading environment.
