Elephant and Castle

Find out about Elephant Park, the new town centre and other developments in this area.

What this programme will deliver

The 15 year programme began in 2010. This is what it will deliver when complete.

Housing

At least 5,000 new and replacement homes are being built.

At least 1,650 of these will be affordable homes.

Town centre and shops

The new town centre will be pedestrianised and include up to 450,000 square feet of retail space.

The old Elephant and Castle shopping centre closed in autumn 2020 and was redeveloped as part of this project. You can read a study on the impact of the shopping centre closure.

Community benefits

More than £240 million will be invested in education and culture in the area.

A new £20 million leisure centre was completed in 2016.

In 2016, Lendlease opened the Southwark Construction Skills Centre at Elephant Park. The centre is committed to training 1,000 local residents every year. So far it has trained over 8,000 people.

Transport

More than £140 million is being invested in transport improvements. So far, these include:

  • a reconfigured road system
  • new pedestrian routes
  • new cycle lanes

A new ticket hall is being built for the Northern line tube station.

Green spaces

Three new public squares have been built and £6 million is being spent on improving local parks. 1,200 trees are being planted.

Elephant Park includes central London’s first major new park in decades.

Elephant Park is one of only 18 projects globally to be included in the Clinton Climate Positive Development Programme.
